New carnival in Barcelona

The carnival is almost here, that crazy party that usually takes place in February. With it the city will fill with colour, with all those parades and original costumes. Barcelona has just promoted a new type of carnival with the aim of bringing back traditional and historical activities. It’s all about celebrating events in all areas and get people to participate. That´s why if you’re in Barcelona during this time, enjoy yourself and book a hotel right in the centre, like the Caledonian Hotel. This year instead of some of the traditional parades, there will be dances and the traditional Easter celebration of the burial of the sardine. The event schedule has been designed in collaboration with historians Xavier Cordomi and Albert Garcia Espuche. Although the final programme has not been finalized yet, we can give some pointers towards what’s going to happen. On the 16^th of February there will be some events in the Market of Santa Ceterina. The Pasel del Born will be full of happiness with the King of Carnival parading with his followers. The time for joy is here! Every different area has its own carnival on 18^th of February, on the 19^th of February there will be spectacular dances and costumes. First the children’s ones and then the adults’. The main events will take place in the Borne, the Gothic area and around the Francia station. The burial of the sardine will take place on 22^nd February in the park of the Ciutadella with many different activities for children.

Raval’s Festival of Culture

The Raval’s Festival will take over the streets until the 13th of November in this fantastic area full of cultura and colour with an incredible amount of opportunities of enjoyment for everybody.

The diversity in el Raval is also one of the great attractions of the area. El Raval is a melting pot of different cultures come from all over the world which has given it its own personality and a unique culture. During the whole time the festival is on, going around the Raval you will see theatre, music, cinema and exhibitions.

The street will the stage where culture happens during this festival. There will be street markets, gastronomical workshops, “danzadores de paloteado” or “traditional dancers with sticks”, Bollywood dances, magic or even capoeira dancers from Brazil.

In the food front, “En TAPA’t en el Raval” is a scheme that will introduce different tapas for just 3 Euros in the different bars in the area.

The central point of the festivities will be the Rambla del Raval, where most of the events will take place. For instance, music concerts as well as children’s workshops. You can’t really miss the fun gymkhana of el Raval that will help you to get to know the area better.

On the other hand, if exhibitions are your cup of tea, we would suggest you visit the “Memoria Fotográfica del Raval”, just on for this festival, and where you will be able to enjoy images of the area and its people throughout its history.

Chestnut festival in the Poble Español

The area of Poble Español, Spanish People, located in the mountain of Montjuic, has become this days the best place to celebrate the glory of chestnuts. In this fantastic area the whole family will be able to enjoy an intensive activity day, especially for children as they will be able to participate many different activities. Among the different surprises that they will discover here, the most important are the lady who will give chestnuts and other goodies o all of those who come over here. This “Castañera” or chestnut lady will be accompanied by “cabezudos”, people dressed up and wearing massive masks, hence the name “cabezudo” or “big head”. Together they will make sure visitors have fun all day with music and showmanship. From 10.30am the day starts with all sorts of activities for adults and children. The little ones will have the chance to participate in a gastronomical workshop in the area of Baluard to learn how to bake chestnut and sweet potato cakes, very traditional in Catalonia at this time of year. Also at 13.30 in Plaça Aragonesa, the chestnut lady will give away chestnuts to all of those who want to eat them. But the activities won’t finish here, because there will be music on the streets. It is also a good time to explore the famous area of Poble Español, an open-air museum with buildings representative of all the regions of Spain. This is a museum of all the most outstanding buildings in the whole of Spain. In Poble Español we will find a square from Zaragoza, a building from Toledo or a beautiful balcony from Andalucia. They also organize craft workshops because it is precisely there where the most important craft groups in the city are. It is high time to enjoy the chestnut festival in such an enigmatic city, Barcelona. The Festivities of “la Merce”

People have taken to the party in Barcelona, from now until Sunday 25th of September the city is celebrating the festivities of la Mercè.

This event attracts every year many locals and tourists who take part in all the different activities. After the opening of the festivities with the presentation at the council of Barcelona, the party starts. The concerts of the BAM’s cycle will take place all over the city: in the Plaza del Rei, Plaza Reial and Plaza Cataluña among others. There will also be different events for children like games and activities also other gastronomical events.

During the events, theatre goers can also benefit from a % discount on theatre tickets. There are many different shows on offer like musicals or smaller gigs. These theatre offers are part of the events every year.

However the Mercè is something else, because there will also be fire activities. Brave young men will, literally fire runners. It’s a way to celebrate fire and water. The festivities will also take over the beach and some areas will have street dances.

The festivities will end with the fireworks dancing against music. The fireworks will be fired from Avenida de Maria Cristina before Montjuic. The fountains in Monjuic will also display their water and colours.
